MemberI Was Successful. But I Was Not Okay.”
On paper, my life looked perfect.
Good job. Good salary. Promotions. Respect.
People used to say, “You’re doing so well!”But nobody saw what was happening inside.
I work in a competitive corporate environment. Deadlines were tight. Targets were aggressive. Messages didn’t stop — even after office hours. Slowly, my day stopped having a beginning or an end.
I started waking up anxious.
My mind was already working before I even got out of bed. My chest felt heavy. Small mistakes felt like disasters. I was scared of disappointing my manager. I was scared of being replaced. I was scared of slowing down.
So I didn’t slow down.I skipped meals. I skipped sleep. I skipped social plans.
I told myself, “This is normal. Everyone is stressed.”But it wasn’t just stress anymore.
I became irritable with my family. I stopped enjoying things I used to love. I would stare at my laptop screen and feel blank. Sometimes I cried in the washroom at work — quietly — and then went back to meetings like nothing happened.
The scariest part?
I started believing my worth depended only on my performance. One bad review felt like I was a bad person.
One delayed task felt like I was a failure.
One comparison with a colleague felt like I was behind in life.It took a mild panic attack during a presentation for me to realise something was wrong. My hands were shaking. My voice cracked. My heart was racing. And for the first time, I couldn’t “push through.”
I had to admit:
I was burnt out.Not lazy. Not weak. Burnt out.It wasn’t easy. Work culture doesn’t change overnight. But I changed how much I allowed it to consume me.
Today, I still work hard.
But I don’t sacrifice my mental health for approval. If you’re reading this while feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or silently breaking under work pressure:You are not weak.
You are human.Success means nothing if you lose yourself in the process.
And it is okay to choose your mental health — even in a world that glorifies overwork. 🌿
